Most modern Land Rovers use a keyless smart fob, with a hidden mechanical blade for emergencies. Discovery 3 and 4 and the first Range Rover Sport store key data in a keyless vehicle module. Later models use a module called the RFA. The classic Defender, built until 2016, uses a far simpler key.
On a Discovery 3 or first-generation Range Rover Sport with no key left, the module has to come out so its memory chip can be read on the bench, so that job takes longer than adding a spare. That spread is why we ask for the registration first. Land Rover key replacement on the older keyless models is well established, and a Land Rover spare key for them is routine work, while some of the newest generations are much harder outside the dealer network. We'll tell you which applies before travelling, not after.
It's the message Land Rover owners ring about most. The usual cause is simple: a weak battery in the Land Rover key fob, so the car can't hear it. Before anything else, try a fresh battery. Most models also have a backup spot, shown in the handbook, where the fob is held so the car can read it even with a flat cell.
If a new battery doesn't help, the fob itself may have failed, or the car's receiver may have a fault. Both are tested at the car. If the Land Rover key fob has simply cracked or worn its buttons after years of use, the case can often be rebuilt around the original electronics instead, which keeps its programming. Range Rovers and Discoverys are well-known targets for keyless theft, where the signal from a key inside the house is relayed to the car. A few habits help: keep keys away from the front door, use a signal-blocking pouch, and turn off keyless entry if your model allows it.
If a key is lost or stolen, make sure it's deleted from the car's memory when a new one is programmed. Where the system allows, that happens at the same visit. A Land Rover spare key, registered as a separate key, can be removed on its own later if it ever goes missing, which is one more reason to have one made before you need it.
