Jaguar and Land Rover have been one company for years, and their keys show it. The first-generation XF uses a keyless vehicle module much like the one in a Discovery 4, while the XE, the later XF and the F-Pace use the same RFA module found in newer Land Rovers.
That shared design means Jaguar key programming follows a well-understood route on many models, with the smart function, remote buttons and start system all paired at the car. It also means the same caveat applies: some of the newest key systems are much harder to work on outside the dealer. The registration tells us which group your car falls into.
One XF fault is worth knowing about. A flat battery can corrupt the car's body control module, leaving it unresponsive even with a perfectly good key. It needs resetting with dealer-level software, and a new key won't cure it, so it's diagnosed before any key work is quoted.
Plenty of used Jaguars are sold with a single smart key, and owners often only notice when it's too late. A Jaguar spare key is far simpler to make while one key still works, because the existing key helps authorise the new one. Jaguar key programming for a spare usually takes around an hour at the car.
The spare is registered as a separate key, with keyless entry, push-button start and the remote all tested at the car. If a key is ever lost, it can then be removed from the car on its own.
