Adding A Dependable Backup Key To A BMW 1 Series
The owner of this BMW 1 Series in Sway had one working key and wanted a dependable spare before that single key became a more urgent problem.
View jobLost your BMW key, need a second one, or the car has stopped recognising the key you've got? New Forest Auto Locksmith is a mobile BMW locksmith, cutting and programming keys at the car anywhere in the New Forest.

Most BMW keys fall into three types. Older cars use a slot key, a small fob that pushes into a slot by the steering wheel. Many cars use a remote key with a folding or fixed blade. Newer models with comfort access use a proximity key, and a few use the larger display key with a small screen.
Knowing which you have lets us quote accurately before we travel. A photo, or the registration, is enough. One thing worth knowing about slot keys: many recharge their battery while sitting in the slot, so when one dies, a new battery usually won't bring it back.

BMW has changed where it stores key data several times. Older cars from around the turn of the century use the EWS immobiliser. Through the 2000s, most moved to the CAS module, and more recent F- and G-series cars keep key data in the FEM or BDC.
This matters because BMW key programming usually isn't a simple "learn a new key" routine. The relevant module is read, and a new key is prepared carrying that car's own data. It's specialist work, but it's done at the vehicle, which is why a BMW with no working key doesn't have to be recovered to a dealer.

A lost BMW key is replaced in three steps, including on FEM and BDC cars where no key is left at all. First, the module is read to prepare the new key. Then the emergency blade is cut to the locks. Finally, everything is tested: locking, starting and, where fitted, comfort access. Where the system allows, the missing key is deleted at the same visit. A BMW spare key, made while one key still works, follows a shorter version of the same process. Both are explained in full on our Lost Car Keys and Spare Car Keys pages.
BMW key replacement is priced from the registration before we set off, and nothing is paid until the key works. We cover all the popular models, with separate pages for the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3 and X5.

On a BMW, more than most makes, yes. Because a lost key means reading the module and building a key from scratch, the gap in cost and time between a BMW spare key and an all-keys-lost job is wide. With one working key present, BMW key programming for a second key is quicker and simpler, and the spare is registered separately, so it can be removed later if it ever goes missing. If you bought the car with one key, it's worth sorting before that key wears out.
