View jobKey won't turn, a steering lock warning on the dash, or a Mercedes key that's gone missing? New Forest Auto Locksmith diagnoses Mercedes-Benz key problems at the car across the New Forest, and tells you upfront when a model has to go to the dealer.

On some models, including certain earlier C-Class generations, the steering column is locked electronically rather than by the key. When that electronic steering lock fails, the key goes into the ignition and nothing happens: the steering stays locked, the dash may show a warning, and the car won't start.
It's one of the most common Mercedes faults we're called out for, particularly on the C-Class, and it's a repair we carry out ourselves. It can look a lot like a key problem. That's why the key, the ignition switch and the steering lock are each tested at the car before anything is replaced. Where the steering lock is the cause, the repair is covered on our Ignition Repair page.

Many Mercedes models from the 2000s and 2010s use an electronic ignition switch, called the EIS or EZS, instead of a mechanical barrel. The chrome-edged key slots in, and the switch checks an encrypted signal before allowing the car to start. Mercedes key programming means reading that switch to prepare a key it will accept.
Keys for most Mercedes models up to around 2013 are made at the car. Later models use a newer key generation that's much harder to produce outside the dealer network, so rather than guess, we check your registration before quoting. If your car can't be done on site, you'll hear that on the phone, not on the driveway.

Before assuming the worst, a few checks help. Try the spare key if you have one: if it works, the fault is in the first key. Fit a fresh battery, as a weak cell stops many Mercedes keys communicating with the switch. If neither helps, the problem may be the key's electronics, the ignition switch or the steering lock, and that needs testing at the car. Where it's the key, Mercedes key programming or a replacement key sorts it. Where it's the switch, we'll explain the options and the price before any work.

For a lost Mercedes key on a supported model, a mobile locksmith is usually quicker and cheaper. The switch is read, a new key prepared and tested, and the car never moves. The dealer route often means recovery and a workshop booking. For the newest key systems, the dealer may be the only option, and we'll say so.
Mercedes key replacement, spares and switch faults are covered for the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class, GLA and GLC, each of which has its own page. If a lost Mercedes key has left you stranded, our Lost Car Keys page explains the full process.
