A well-known fault on many Volkswagen group cars of the mid-2000s to early 2010s is the ignition and steering lock unit failing. The key goes in, but the ignition won't turn or the dash stays dark. It affects the Golf and Touran, and the same part is shared with the Octavia, A3 and Leon.

The year your Volkswagen was built makes a real difference. On models up to around 2018, VW key replacement is done at the car even when every key has been lost: the immobiliser data is read, a new key coded, and the blade cut to the locks.
On the newest Volkswagens, built on the latest immobiliser system, a VW spare key can still be added as long as one working key is present. Volkswagen's keyless system, KESSY, lets the car unlock and start with the key in a pocket. VW key programming on these cars sets up the proximity function as well as the remote and the immobiliser, and all three are tested before we finish.
