How Volvo Stores Your Key: The CEM
Many Volvos keep their key data in the central electronic module, or CEM. When a key is added or replaced, Volvo key programming works with that module so the car accepts the new key and allows the engine to start. Which method is used depends on the model and its age.
On older models, the CEM route is well established and spares and replacements are routine. Volvo's more recent platforms, used on the latest XC90, XC60 and the XC40, take a different route, but keys for them, including all-keys-lost, are still made at the car. The registration tells us which method applies.

Volvo keys have changed shape as much as they've changed electronics. Older models used a key with a fold-out or fixed blade and a remote built into the head. Some later models offered a larger key with an information display, and recent Volvos use slim keyless fobs that stay in a pocket.

Is Your Volvo Key Battery Flat?
A Volvo key fob that only works close to the car, or a keyless Volvo that can't find its key, usually just needs a new battery. On keyless models, the handbook shows a backup position where the key is held so the car can read it anyway. If a fresh battery doesn't help, the key is tested at the car, and a Volvo spare key or reprogramming is suggested only if the key has really failed.

The new key is prepared and coded to the car, the emergency blade cut to the locks, and everything tested, including keyless entry where fitted.
