Adding A Dependable Backup Key To A Lexus UX
The owner of this Lexus UX in Ashurst had one working key and wanted a dependable spare before that single key became a more urgent problem.
View jobLexus key lost, a spare needed, or a hybrid that won't respond to its key? New Forest Auto Locksmith works on Lexus keys at the vehicle across the New Forest, from IS saloons to RX and NX hybrids.

Many Lexus models are hybrids, and they still rely on a small 12-volt battery to power the locks, the key reader and the start system. If that battery is flat, the car can ignore a perfectly good key. Before assuming the key has failed, ask whether the car has stood for a while or had the lights left on.
If the 12-volt battery checks out and the car still won't recognise the key, the key itself is tested next. A failed Lexus smart key can be replaced or reprogrammed at the car, and Lexus key programming covers the keyless entry and start functions as well as the remote. If the Lexus key fob has been through the wash, it's worth drying it fully and fitting a new battery before calling. See Car Key Programming.

Lexus keys are generally tough. The housings hold up well, and the electronics are reliable. What fails is usually more mundane: a flat Lexus key fob battery, which is a cheap fix, a fob that has been through the wash, or a key that has simply been lost. On used cars, the commonest problem is having only one key to begin with.
That makes a Lexus spare key one of the most worthwhile jobs on these cars. Lexus belongs to the Toyota group, and newer models use more advanced transponder types. Spares and all-keys-lost replacements are both done at the car, including on newer models, although an all-keys-lost job takes longer than adding a spare. We'll confirm the details from the registration. A Lexus spare key made now also means a lost Lexus key later is an inconvenience rather than a crisis. See Spare Car Keys.

Most Lexus models use a smart key that stays in a pocket for keyless entry and push-button start. Some have also offered a slim card key as an extra option. Both hide a small mechanical blade for opening the door if the battery dies, and it's worth knowing where yours is before you need it. Most slide out with a small catch on the side or back of the key.
Lexus key programming pairs the smart function, the remote buttons and the start system, and every one is tested at the car before we finish. A lost Lexus key is covered on our Lost Car Keys page. Model-specific notes are on our IS, RX and NX pages.
