Can A Locksmith Do Keys For A New MG?
Yes. Keys for the modern MG range, including the ZS, HS and electric MG4, are cut and programmed at the car, both for spares and when every key has been lost. On some models, a security PIN has to be bought from the manufacturer first, using the car's details and your proof of ownership.
That last point is worth knowing before you call. Please have the V5C and photo ID ready, so the PIN can be ordered straight away if your car needs one. The cost is included in the quote, so there are no surprises.

The Electric MG4
The MG4 is fully electric, but its key does the same job as any other: it unlocks the car and authorises it to drive. MG key programming on the MG4 covers the smart key's keyless entry and start, and every function is tested at the car before we finish.
Like any electric car, the MG4 also has a small 12-volt battery that powers the locks and electronics. If that's flat, the car can ignore a working key, so it's worth checking first if the car has been left unused.
Small MG Key Faults Worth Ruling Out
Not every MG key problem needs a new key. A fob that only works close to the car usually has a weak battery. Buttons that need a hard press often have worn contacts under the rubber, which can be repaired. A remote that has stopped locking the car may just need re-pairing, and MG key programming at the car restores it without a new key. If testing shows the key has truly failed, an MG spare key or replacement is quoted before any work.
