The Nissan Steering Lock Warning
On some Nissan models, including earlier versions of the Qashqai and Micra, the steering is locked electronically. When that lock fails, the car may show a steering or key warning and refuse to start, even with the correct key. It's often mistaken for a key fault, so the lock and the key are tested separately at the car.
A failed lock is repaired or replaced on site, as explained on our Ignition Repair page. If testing points to the key instead, Nissan key programming or a new key puts it right, and we'll tell you which before any work begins.

What Is A Nissan Intelligent Key?
Nissan calls its keyless system the Intelligent Key. It stays in a pocket while the car unlocks and starts at the push of a button, and like most smart keys it hides a mechanical blade for emergencies. Older Nissans use a remote key with a flip or fixed blade instead.
Both types are programmed at the vehicle, and a Nissan spare key is quickest while one key still works, and the car's security code is retrieved as part of the process, so you don't need to find it.
