Many Renaults don't use a conventional key at all. Models such as the Mégane, Scénic and later Clio use a flat keycard, which slots into a reader or stays in a pocket for hands-free entry and start. Other Renaults use a remote flip key. Each card or key hides a small mechanical blade for the doors.
Knowing which one you have is the first step, as cards and keys are coded differently. A photo or the registration is enough for us to identify it and quote before we travel.
A Renault that won't see its keycard is a familiar problem. The cause can be a flat card battery, a worn card, or the card reader in the car itself. A fresh battery is always worth trying first, and most hands-free models will still start with the card pushed fully into the reader slot.
If the card still isn't recognised, it's tested at the car. A failed card is replaced and coded, while a reader fault is diagnosed before any key work is quoted. Renault key programming won't cure a faulty reader, so testing first saves you paying for the wrong fix. Cards that have been sat on, bent or put through the wash are a common cause too. Renault key programming has two details that catch people out. First, the replacement card or key must carry the correct transponder chip for the car. Two that look identical can be electronically different, and the wrong one will never program. Second, the car's battery is supported throughout the job, because a voltage dip during programming can damage the electronics.
Both are routine for us, and they're the reason a cheap online card often fails to work. A Renault spare key or card made with the right chip, and coded with the battery supported, works first time. See Spare Car Keys.
Renault key replacement with no working card or key left is still done at the car. A new card or key is coded to the vehicle, its emergency blade cut to the locks, and everything tested, including hands-free entry where fitted.
