Two Keys Or One? Older Subarus Explained
Some older Subarus use a bladed key with a chip for starting, plus a separate remote fob for locking and unlocking. Newer models combine both in one key, and higher-spec versions use a smart key for keyless access and push-button start. Knowing which you have tells us exactly what needs replacing.
On the two-piece setup, it's common for only the remote to fail while the key still starts the car, or the other way round. Each part is tested separately, so you only pay for the one that's actually faulty. Where only the remote has failed, Subaru key programming pairs a new remote to the car while the original key carries on starting it.

Subarus On Forest Tracks
Foresters and Outbacks are popular cars around the New Forest, and they spend plenty of time in muddy car parks and on gravel tracks. Keys go missing in heather and bracken, and fobs take knocks and soakings. A lost Subaru key is replaced at the car, wherever it's parked: the key is coded, the blade cut, and the missing key removed from the car's memory where possible. See Lost Car Keys.

Subaru Spare Keys & Programming
A Subaru spare key is the simple insurance policy for a car with one key. It's cut and coded at the vehicle while your existing key still works, and registered as a separate key. See Spare Car Keys.
Subaru key programming covers the start chip, the remote and the keyless access function where fitted, with every part tested before we leave. If a keyless Subaru stops sensing its key, try a fresh battery first, as a weak cell is the usual cause. See Car Key Programming.

Before You Call About A Lost Subaru Key
It's worth a few minutes' thought before ringing. If someone at home has a spare, the job becomes a copy rather than a full replacement, which is quicker and cheaper. If you think the key may have been stolen rather than lost, tell us, so it can be deleted when the new key is programmed. Then send the registration and the car park name or nearest road, and we'll give you a price and arrival time.

Remote Or Key Damaged?
Subaru remote housings crack and button rubbers wear through, often while the electronics inside are perfectly healthy. A rebuild into a new housing keeps the original programming, so the key works straight away. See Broken Car Keys.
Subaru key replacement is covered across the range, with separate pages for the Impreza, Forester and Outback. Each covers the key types used on its generations.
