VW Golf Ignition Fault Assessment
The ignition and steering lock unit is a common failure point on the Mk5 and Mk6. A problem in that unit is not the same as a missing or damaged key, so requesting a replacement key may not address the actual fault.

Which Golf Generation Is Parked Outside?

Mk5 and Mk6
The Mk5 ran from around 2003–2008, with the Mk6 following approximately 2008–2012. Both sit within our earlier mobile lost-key coverage. They are also the generations where the common ignition and steering lock unit fault needs particular attention.
Mk7 around the changeover
The Mk7 spans roughly 2012–2019. Around 2018 marks the upper end of our coverage for replacing a completely missing set of keys where the Golf stands. Later cars need checking: on the newest system we provide spares only, and losing every key means a dealer referral.
Mk8 limitations
The Mk8 dates from around 2020 onwards and is spare-only for our key work. If no working key remains, the dealer is the route required. We make that distinction before arranging a visit.

Keeping a Working Key in Reserve
A Golf spare key is worth arranging before the only working one is missing. Our spare key service includes confirming the car's eligibility first. For Golf key programming, provide the registration and say whether your existing key is available and working.
A lost Golf key on an eligible earlier car can be replaced where the vehicle stands, including at home or work. Golf key programming does not require bringing the car to us. The quote reaches you ahead of our departure, while key making waits until we have inspected your V5C and photo ID. Advance payment is not part of the arrangement. A change to the job puts work on hold while we explain the revised tasks and charge; you can decline that proposal without incurring a call-out fee.
